Lapiplasty Q&A

What are bunions?

A bunion, also known as hallux valgus, is a bony bump that develops on the side of your foot at the base of your big toe. It forms when your toe bones drift out of alignment.

The big toe begins to lean inward toward the other toes, inching the joint out of place and making it bulge. Shoes put pressure on the bunion, causing tremendous pain with every step.

Bunions are one of the most common foot deformities. They worsen over time and don’t resolve on their own.

What is Lapiplasty®?

Traditional bunion surgery is focused on merely shaving off the visible bump. The innovative Lapiplasty procedure uses advanced technology to correct the bunion in three dimensions by rotating the bone back into place and securing it with titanium plates.

Because Lapiplasty tackles the root of the problem, your outcome is a more natural foot shape, better alignment, and a reduced chance of the bunion recurring.

What is recovery from Lapiplasty like?

One benefit of Lapiplasty is that you’ll be up walking in a boot within days of the procedure. This is in stark contrast to traditional surgery, which has you waiting 7-9 weeks before putting pressure on your foot.

After about a month, you can resume light activities with your boot on. In the second month, you can transition out of the boot and into comfortable shoes with a wide toe box. Between 4-6 months, you can put on regular footwear and return to your normal activities, including sports.
