Bursitis Q&A

What is bursitis?

The inflammation of a bursa — a tiny, fluid-filled sac that helps cushion and reduce friction between bones, tendons, and muscles near joints — is known as bursitis. When one of these sacs becomes irritated, it can lead to pain, swelling, and reduced mobility in the surrounding area.

Bursitis most commonly occurs in the shoulders, elbows, hips, and knees, but it can also develop in other joints like the heels or the base of the big toe.

What are the symptoms of bursitis?

Symptoms of bursitis can vary depending on the location and severity of the inflammation. The most common signs include:

  • Pain
  • Tenderness
  • Stiffness around the affected joint
  • Swelling
  • Redness
  • Warmth

Pain often worsens with movement or pressure and can become severe enough to interfere with everyday activities. Chronic bursitis can cause ongoing discomfort and decreased range of motion.

What causes bursitis?

Bursitis is often caused by repetitive motions or prolonged pressure on a joint. Activities that involve repeated kneeling, leaning on elbows, or lifting overhead can contribute to the condition.

It can also develop from a sudden injury or trauma to a joint.

Other risk factors include:

  • Aging
  • Overuse
  • Poor posture
  • Conditions such as arthritis, gout, or diabetes

In rare cases, you can develop bursitis from an infection. This is known as septic bursitis and requires prompt medical attention.

How is bursitis treated?

The Podiatry & Sports Medicine Associates P.C. providers offer treatment that focuses on relieving symptoms and allowing the affected joint to heal.

Rest is key. Avoid activities that aggravate the condition to help reduce inflammation. Apply ice packs, take over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen or acetaminophen, and use compression wraps to help provide relief. Your provider may also recommend gentle stretching or physical therapy to restore flexibility and strength.

If the inflammation is severe or doesn’t improve with self-care, your podiatrist may prescribe stronger medications, drain fluid from the bursa, or administer corticosteroid injections to reduce swelling. If your bursitis is caused by an infection, you may need antibiotics. With proper care, most cases of bursitis resolve within a few weeks.
